The Cancer Challenge wishes to take this opportunity to remind you HPV – related cancers can be effectively prevented with a vaccine that is available now for boys and girls, ages 9 to 26. The Human Papilloma Virus is a common virus that is the cause of cervical cancer in women and oropharyngeal cancer in men. People acquire this virus as adolescents or young adults. It is very common and presents no symptoms so transmission occurs without knowing. Most people can clear the infection without ever being aware that they were exposed but in some instances it remains latent for years and then reappears as a cancer. The diseases caused by HPV are potentially fatal. Prevention is the best treatment. Ask your doctor, health professional or Health Department about HPV vaccination. It is available, safe and an effective life saver.
